To enter the profession, you must complete a 3-year technical DEC in dental hygiene. You must also have a permit from the Ordre des hygiénistes dentaires du Québec, which is issued after completing your training.
There are also a few specialization programs for dental hygienists. The University of Montreal offers a certificate in community health. Laval University, University of Montreal, At UQAM and UQTR offer a certificate in gerontology.
Dental hygienists can work in private dental offices, hospitals, educational institutions, school boards, the federal public service, and the Canadian Armed Forces. The placement rate is 95%. 79% of graduates have found full-time employment related to their studies.
The median salary for a dental hygienist in Quebec is between 36$ and 39$ per hour. The average salary is 35.18$/hour in the hospital sector and between 35$ and 40$ per hour in private practice. The average salary at the beginning of the career is between 30$ and 32$/hour. It rises to between 42$ and 46$/hour at the end of the career.
