The dental assistant assists the dentist and dental hygienists in several tasks. She prepares equipment by sterilizing instruments. She also performs x-rays for several patients.
The dental assistant may also perform certain tasks, such as applying fluoride or polishing teeth. She can also make and insert temporary crowns. They help the dentist with dental examinations. Sometimes she may be called upon to remove stitches or apply desensitizing agents.
The dental assistant can also advise patients on their dental hygiene, schedule appointments and order office supplies.
To become a dental assistant, you must have completed a DVS in dental assistance. The training lasts 1500 hours and is offered during 13 months on a full-time basis.
